Frequently Asked Questions
What is your primary subject matter and what inspires you?
I just paint what I love! And I love the quiet beauty of nature: the way light hits a dewy petal, the colors of a misty mountain valley... My heart truly belongs to painting all those delicate details. I'm constantly chasing that magic light you see at golden hour, the amazing colors in a flower, or the quiet, innocent presence of a wild animal. I then seek to share it with you through my brushes, creating a lasting touchpoint for the peace and awe these scenes inspire.
How long does it take to complete a painting?
The timeline for a painting is unique to each piece. While the actual brushwork might take just a couple of days or weeks, that's only part of the process. A painting's journey includes the initial concept and sketches, preparing the surface, building up the layers of paint, and then allowing for proper drying time between sessions. Finally, once the painting is complete, it requires a significant curing period before it can be varnished and is ready for its new home. So, while some pieces come together quickly, a more complex work can easily take several months from start to finish.
Do you work from life or from photographs?
I use both methods, as each offers unique advantages. I often work from photographs, which allow me to capture fine details and compose complex pieces in the studio. However, I have a deep love for working from life — especially en plein air (outdoors). Painting on location provides an irreplaceable energy and a truer sense of the moment's light and atmosphere, which inevitably brings a different feeling to the work.
What materials do you use?
I'm a dedicated oil painter, and my entire process is built around archival integrity and luminosity. I work exclusively with artist-grade oils from a select palette of best paintmakers, on either cotton or linen canvas or solid panels. Everything, from the canvas to the varnish, is chosen for its longevity and ability to achieve the luminous colours and enduring quality.
Do you varnish your paintings?
I apply a retouch varnish within weeks after the painting has been finished to protect the surface and saturate the colors. Once the oil paint has fully cured months later, I apply the final, removable picture varnish for long-term protection. This careful, traditional method ensures that a painting will look vibrant and be well-protected for a lifetime.
Do your original paintings look exactly like they do online?
While I take every effort to ensure my online photos are as accurate as possible, a screen cannot fully capture the original. The physical painting will always have a unique energy, with colors that are more nuanced and textured brushstrokes that you can see and feel. In many ways, seeing the original is a more dynamic experience. The painting comes to life as light plays across the canvas, revealing details and a sense of energy that a flat image can only hint at.
Do you have any advice for preserving an oil painting?
With proper care, an oil painting can maintain its beauty for a lifetime. Here are a few key guidelines:
Hang your painting in a spot where strong, direct sunlight won't fade the pigments over time.
Keep it in a stable environment, away from extreme humidity, high heat, or rapid temperature changes.
You can lightly dust the surface with a clean, soft, dry brush (like a clean makeup or sable brush) when needed.
If you need to move it, handle the painting by the frame and avoid touching the painted surface.
